Zedoary – mango herb of Indian streets



Indian herbs have conquered almost all over the world. These herbs have reached almost all parts of the world. The benefits of Indian herbs – Ayurveda have reached many different countries, thus they are widely used as alternative medicines to curb down numerous ailments. Zedoary is an herb that falls in the class of Indian traditional herbs- Ayurveda. A member of Zingiberaceae family, zedoary is inhabitant to Indonesia and India. This plant was actually brought to Europe and Middle East around 6th century and was used as spice in the daily cuisine. This herb is now been replaced by ginger. Also known as white turmeric- this herb is similar to turmeric and mango. Zedoary is rhizome that has thin skin of brown and bright orange color. The herb possesses the property of warm and spicy flavor that adds zest to different food items. Zedoary is a woody herb that bears shiny yellow flowers with green and red bracts.

As the herb smells similar to that of mango, it is popular as amb halad in Indian streets. This herb is cultivated throughout India, especially in the region of Karnataka and Himalayan. Zedoary is highly beneficial in curbing down numerous diseases such as:

  • Due to inflammatory properties, the paste of zedoary is highly beneficial to cure skin ailments, wounds, and injuries.
  • It is also used in reducing pain that is caused due to any wound or injury.

The roots of zedoary are edible and thus are used in the curry paste. Due to its flavor similar to that of mango, it is used in pickling.
