Herbal Remedies for Bad Breath

When out on that date with that super cute cheerleader, you might want to do a double check on your breath. Even if you’re not going to be able to kiss her (You wish!), you wouldn’t still want bad breath in her face while you talk to each other.

Whether you call it bad breath or by its scientific name, halitosis, you can’t really minus the unpleasantness that is associated with it. People who are affected by this condition will have bad breath wafting out of their mouth, when they open their mouth to speak.

Causes

The most common causes of bad breath would be vices like smoking, intake of nicotine in any other form, consumption of alcohol, the culinary use of and the consumption of foodstuffs which get associated with lingering and strong odors (examples: onions, garlic, anchovies).

Medical examinations might have to be conducted if you begin suffering from a chronic case.

The multiplication of odor-causing bacteria has its links with dryness in the mouth. The salivary glands will begin to produce lesser amounts of saliva, thus indicating that a relatively dry mouth can lead to bad breath. A drier mouth can almost always increase the bacterial multiplication; and more bacterial multiplication would then mean more bad breath.

Other causes might include reduced flow of saliva; restricted intake of food which will cause for lesser production of saliva; and some kind of drugs and medication which will induce the condition.

Supplements and Herbs to the Rescue

Herbal based natural remedies might use herbs that will act as active ingredients to combat bad breath. Use this in combination with proper dental hygiene regimen and you’ll do fine. The proper dental regimen should include regular and thorough brushing, rinsing of the teeth, flossing. Preferably using a paste or a herbal oil which uses herbs to gently cleanse the mouth will be a good option to keep the bad breath at bay.

The Back of the Tongue

The most important part of your mouth that needs to be kept clean is the back of your tongue. This is where most of the bacteria are known to accumulate; and cause for bad breath. Most people end up not paying attention to this area of the mouth. To clean this area, use small doses (one or two drops) of peppermint oil on your tongue. You could do this a couple of times in the day. Remember, do not use large doses, as peppermint oil in overly large quantities could cause for digestive problems. The peppermint oil works as an effective bactericidal agent. For herb based oil, peppermint is both pleasing to taste and is highly refreshing at the same time.  It can be used in the form of spearmint along with tea, to achieve similar results.  The tea will also help in retaining the moisture of the mouth and thus combat the prevalence of bad breath.

Herbal Seeds

You could alternatively try chewing on herbal seeds – fennel, cloves and anise. These aid the freshening of breath and are known to be appealing to taste. These help in the overall oral hygiene up keeping. Parsley is also known to have similar effects on oral hygiene, and has a pigment called chlorophyll which works as a powerful breath freshener.  Herbal drinks should be swished around in the mouth for them to have the desired effects. Some herbs also come in tablet form, so they are available to you throughout the day, no matter where you may be.
