Devil’s claw -South African herb



People like to stay far way from devils and evil spirits, but here I am mentioning you with one of the herbs that have been given by devil. Surprised, well don’t be, it is just an herb that has been named as Devil’s claw. This plant has got such weird name because of its hooked appearance.

Devil’s claw belongs to sesame family that is resident of Southern Africa. A perennial plant, it posses leafy appearance with branching roots. They love to grow in muddy and sandy soils. The secondary roots that come out from main roots are beneficial for medicinal purposes. You may generally find this plant in eastern and south eastern parts of Namibia.

The two main ingredient and constituent of devil’s claw are beta- sitosterol and harpagoside. These elements are believed to possess anti- inflammatory properties. Devil’s claw is also said to be sedative, diuretic, and analgesic. This plant also contains many chemical nutrients that are beneficial to cure numerous ailments. The iridoid glycosides, which is present in devil’s claw, is said to possess anti-inflammatory properties. The second element, harpagoside is favorable to relieve complication and pain.

Devil’s claw has been used from past thousand years in many parts of the world. The folks from Kalahari dessert are using this plant as herbal remedy to fight against several diseases. It was widely used to lessen down the pain and troubles during pregnancy. Besides, it was also used for skin ailments such as burns, swollen heals, and boils.

This plant was brought from Africa to Europe during 19th century, where they used to dry the roots for medicinal purposes.
