Hoja Santa is a heart shaped aromatic herb having velvety leaf and it grows in the tropic area of Mesoamerica. Hoja Santa is a Spanish for ‘Sacred Leaf’. The other name for this herb are hierba santa, yerba santa, Mexican pepperleaf, sacred pepper, and root beer plant.
Leaves of this herb can become up to thirty centimeters or twelve inches in size. The flavor of Hoja Santa and hence is hard to describe. It can compared to eucalyptus, sassafras, licorice, anise, mint, nutmeg, black pepper, and tarragon. This flavor is stronger in young veins and stems.
Hoja Santa is often used in the Mexican cuisine for tamales, the meat or fish which are wrapped fragrant leaves for cooking. It is also an important element in Mole Verde, a green sauce which originated in Oaxaca region at Mexico. It [...]
