Exercise is fast being bypassed by people in the fast lane not even bothering to cast it a cursory glance as they move along in a life inhabited by poor eating habits, regular stress and poor fitness regimens. Is it any wonder then that heart diseases are cropping up more rapidly than you can say “Robinson Crusoe”? An increasing number of medical practitioners are reporting patients with heart diseases and an increasing percentage of these are angina patients. This pain is like a pulsating bolt of lightning that radiates outwards from your heart to your chest and upper left torso (which includes your jaw-line, shoulder and neck) and while there are herbal remedies present to cure Angina it is always best to try and get immediate medical attention even as the herbal medication mediates and reduces the pain.

To understand Angina better, you must understand the underlying causes for it. Angina is a direct result of fat deposits lining your coronary arteries and while this is not much of an issue in the short term, over time it means that you will eventually be starved of oxygen and nutrients (gradually at first) which in turn causes the searing pain in the heart that we know as Angina. This pain does not manifest itself when you are sitting still and sedentary, instead waiting for you and causing a lot of pain (like a bad birthday surprise) when you’ve decided to set off on a jog or are indulging in a spot of rock climbing. This is because the heart is struggling to receive any oxygen and cannot pump out enough blood as the heart beats go up. It’s a domino effect of the worst sort, and it’s playing out inside you whether you realize it or not.

Modern drugs can deal with Angina, but most of them have known side effects that may or may not affect you in the short or long term. Herbal medicines on the other hand are more natural and as such are accepted by the body as they are not alien in the slightest. The Chinese are known to have created a potent herbal cure for Angina and they are so popular as to be present and available for purchase the world over. Another approach you can take is the use of herbs to bring down LDL cholesterol (aka bad cholesterol) and promote HDL cholesterol within your system. These cures are not a quick fix but in time will do away with your angina and in the meantime you can indulge in a spot of early morning walks and yoga to deal with your angina. There’s no reason for it to impede the quality of your life.

Name: Ginseng

Alternate Names:

Panax ginseng (Asian, Chinese or Korean ginseng)

Panax quinquefolius (American, North American or Canadian ginseng)

Traditional Chinese medicine considers ginseng to have some unique healing powers of its own. The American form is supposed to be ‘a more cooling variant’ of its Chinese cousin. This ends up making it a tad more important for healing and curing respiratory track disorders and fevers. The Asian variety, with its heat, is known to improve circulation.

The active compounds available in ginseng are said to be components that are steroid like. These compounds are called ‘ginsenosides’.

Why Ginseng?

The word ‘Panax’ is derived from a Greek word which means ‘all-healing’. In a lot of places around Asia, ginseng is given the spot of being a revitalizer that is effective on the entire human body system. One of the basic reasons for this is the fact that its shape resembles that of a root; which metaphorically, will resemble the human body.

Physical and Mental Performance

Ginseng is said to be a natural adaptogen, which would mean that it is capable of increasing a person’s resistance to chemical, biological and physical stress. It also helps the body to build up on overall energy; and is known to positively influence general and overall vitality of the person.

Immunity

A study was conducted wherein; people who had suffered a minimum of 2 colds the last year were instructed to take 2 capsules of the North American ginseng extract each day. Another group was instructed to stay on a placebo treatment method. They were asked to continue with the intake of either the ginseng or the placebo, for a period of four months. When they were checked later, the number of colds per person had significantly dropped in the case of those who had stuck to ginseng.

Diabetes

In yet another study, 36 patients who had been newly diagnosed with diabetes and weren’t on insulin as yet, were given doses of around 100 mg to 200 mg of Panax ginseng. After a period of around 8 weeks, they were checked for their blood sugar levels. It showed significant improvement; and other benefits included better mood levels; and psychophysical performance that had seen an upper. The ones who had consumed the 200 mg doses also did better with their hemoglobin A1C, which is a test that is used to determine how well the blood sugar levels of a person have been controlled in the last 3 months.

Erectile Dysfunction

In a case study about erectile dysfunction, around half of a 90 men batch with the condition was put onto ginseng; with the others on a placebo. Around 60% of the men with ginseng in their systems ended up faring better. Prescription drugs that deal with erectile dysfunction need be taken only when the need appears. But that isn’t true in the case of ginseng. Ginseng will only show its effects if taken on a regular basis.

The menstrual cycle is known by different names in different nationalities. One of the most common renditions of this is the term ‘AF’ which is used for ‘Aunt Flo (rence)’ which could also stand for ‘Aunt Flow’. The use of this term is often made to discreetly announce the arrival of a menstrual period. Some may call it ‘chums’ (which means friends) or the ‘curse’. Regardless of what its called, the menstrual cycle is an integral part of a woman’s life cycle.

Another ugly accompaniment of the menstrual period, other than all that blood of course, is the presence of the menstrual cramp. Like some evil cousin, she drops in unannounced. Along with her, she brings days and nights of squeamishness and doesn’t let you sit in peace.

Most women resort to some form of drugs to take care of their menstrual cramp problem. We, however, suggest that you go the ‘herbal’ way. According to a new study, Chinese herbs may be better at relieving you from the pain of a menstrual cramp than any other drug has ever been.

Chinese Herbs For Menstrual Cramps:

Australia based researchers conducted the study and it showed that the herbs did play a significant role in reducing the pain that the women were suffering from before the herbs were administered to them. But the best aspect of it was that it actually kept the recurrence of a menstrual cramp the next month at bay. It was effective for up to 3 months.

The author of this study was Xiaoshu Zhu, who is associated with the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research in Sydney. According to him the measures of effectiveness that were available at the moment suggested that the Chinese herbal medicines administered to those suffering from menstrual cramps was superior to the placebo treatments available in the market today.

About The Study:

Period pain is known to affect a good 50 % of the reproductive aged women. Around 60 % of them experience such severe pain that they cannot go about their days as usual – they are absent from school or work.

This survey involved somewhere around 39 trials, wherein, the participants were given concoctions which included herbs that would regulate their ‘qi’ (energy). It helped to warm their body and ended up boosting their liver and kidney functions.

Some of the herbs that were used here included:

Baishao – White peony root

Chishao – Red peony root

Xiangfu – Nut-grass rhizome

Danggui – Chinese angelica root

Yimucao – Chinese Motherwort

Gancao – Liquorice root

Rougui – Cinnamon bark

Chuanxiong – Szechuan lovage root

The researchers, however, quickly added that this discovery was still in its trial stages. Intensive studies would have to be conducted on the findings before they could confirm its effectiveness. So all we have to do now is wait and watch.

The red sage, or danshen as it is called, is a Chinese herb that is valued for the potential and real uses of it in traditional Chinese medicine. This herb is native to China and Japan, and is known to grow in grassy places – forests, along stream banks and hillsides.

Getting acquainted with the red sage

This herb is very rarely used by itself. It is, however, widely used in a combination with other herbs and is known for its quality to cure a diverse number of ailments. Cardiac and vascular disorders have been known to react positively to the application of this herb. It is also said to have quite an effect on abnormalities that include blood clotting.

This herb is known to help in ‘thinning’ the blood, and thus, helps reduce blood clots. This is one of the reasons why it should be avoided in patients who have bleeding disorders; and is a definite no-no prior to surgeries. Do not use it in combination with other blood thinning herbs and medications.

Red Sage gets publicity

In 2007, the Washington Post came out with a news piece that was titled ‘Chinese Herb May Lower High Blood Pressure’. The red sage or danshen (as they referred to it) was famous. Suddenly there was a hype about this natural remedy for blood pressure related ailments.

The news piece further went on to discuss how this herb could one day become the foundation of all high blood pressure treatments. Studies were conducted on this herb, to understand the causes of its effectiveness.

One of these studies used hamsters to work on, and it was seen that the hypertension in hamsters was lowered. This happened due to the widening of their blood vessels which was a direct onset due to the application of the red sage (danshen). One of the researchers on the team, David K. Kim, was quoted in The Washington Post. He said that though traditional Chinese practitioners had established clearly that danshen could help in reducing blood pressure, it was the first time that anyone had been able to figure out how it did so. The reasons had been unknown until date. So this was a breakthrough that was achieved due to this hamster-study.

This research might help lay the groundwork for any investigations that need to be made into danshen’s potential in the future. It could actually be used to create licensed hypertension drugs. The problem with the drugs available in the market right now is that most of them have significant side effects. With the red sage, however, there are lower chances of any such side effects, given the fact that it is effective in its most natural form.

When Monica from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. picked up a mop to clean the floor, we knew it was normal, because she is a character that is obsessive about cleanliness to the extent of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). But for the rest of us earthlings, keeping the house clean and fresh can seem like quite the task. In older days, magic came out of the kitchen cupboards. Our great grandmothers didn’t invest in a million cleaning products, instead they turned to what they already had, and effectively used it to combat those armies of germs that threatened to turn the house into a breeding ground. Herbs and spices uses were a common task and this is also useful for your daily living.

A little research on Chinese herbs will tell you that some simple herbs can leave your house sparkling, with that touch of ‘fresh’ in the air.

SAGE

For centuries, herbs and spices uses have included Sage as it has been used for centuries to gain knowledge and purity. A strong sage tea is said to clear out the negativity from the house. Bundles of sage can be hung in the house. The fragrance is heavenly. According to legends, it helps in keeping the evil spirits at bay.

VANILLA

Vanilla is said to have the power to bring love and happiness into your home. It leaves the house smelling fresh, plus there’s something about the fragrance that leaves the house looking more ‘inviting’.

LEMON PEEL

Lemon peel banishes negativity and objectifies freshness. It is quite the mood lifter, and can be added to the floor water to give the house a zesty fragrance.

ORANGE PEEL

Kill those germ battalions instantly with a dash of orange peel. Plus, the citron smell is an added advantage. Burn orange peels on the stove when you have a cold or a sore throat.

PEPPERMINT

Peppermint gives for a soothing effect. Burn peppermint candles to add to calm those nerves. A few drops could be added to the toilet tank at night, to find a refreshed bathroom overnight.

CLOVES

Cloves are said to promote spirituality and love. The trick is to place these spices in containers that easily camouflage with the room, and then set them in the corners of every room of the house.

EUCALYPTUS

Eucalyptus is said to kill germs effectively. It is used in various herbal medicines as well. It provides for protection while promoting good health.

BASIL

Basil is synonymous with summery scent. This herb is said to promote feelings of fidelity, love, protection and wealth.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon sticks can be placed in cleaning water. This spice is said to promote safety and happiness. Cinnamon used in the floor water is said to give the house a cozy and warm feeling.

CHAMOMILE

The fragrance of chamomile is best described as a combination of apples and fresh cut hay. If you have frequented farms in your childhood (or still do), this is a scent that you will automatically relate to. Chamomile is said to bring peace and serenity to the soul, while it purifies and cleans the house.

Once you’re done cleaning the house, sit down, relax, and brew yourself a cup of green tea; and savor the freshness. These herbs and spices uses can help you achieve a better life, all possible only if you look into your very own kitchen cabinets.
